Vita Sackville-West was a writer and friend of Virginia Wolf and socialised with the so called Bloomsbury Set, a group of writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists during the first half of the 20th century. Sackville was very popular with her weekly gardening column for the Observer newpaper, which helped to make her own gardens famous. The gardens themselves are designed as a series of rooms each with a different colour and theme. Both she and her husband would constantly create new ideas and themes for the gardens.
Knole House is often combined with a visit to Sissinghurst as this is the ancestral home of the Sackville’s and childhood home of Vita Sackville-West. The Sackville family custom of primogeniture prevented Vita from inheriting Knole and upon the death of her father the the estate passed on to his brother Charles. The many state rooms which are open to the public contain fine artefacts from the 17th Century, including three state beds, outstanding tapestries and textiles works of art by Van Dyk, Gainsborough, Kneller and Reynolds.
