Our tour through the Cotswolds – a range of hills with many pretty villages featuring houses with thatched roofs and Cotswolds stone buildings – will take you through Shakespeare Country featuring Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as Warwick Castle .
Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town that grew in prosperity throughout the Middle Ages. It grew from strong sheep farming roots, but is best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Born in 1564, he lived his early life and final decade in Stratford, and is buried in the Holy Trinity Church. His work continues to be popular nearly 400 years after his death. Warwick Castle is one the finest examples of Norman medieval castle construction in Britain. Built around 1068, It stands proud on the banks of the Avon river and offers fine views over the Warwickshire landscape. Its imposing defensive qualities made it one vital in defence of early medieval England. Today visitors marvel at its towers and ramparts, its dungeons with their instruments of torture, the Great Hall, and hear tales the Ghosts of the Castle. There is also an archery demonstration showing how English archers dominated in battle against the French during the 100 years war.
